Baby rushed to hospital after domestic violence call
Crime, News

A man was arrested and a small child was rushed to a hospital after police responded to a domestic disturbance call in Gresham Monday evening.

Officers responded to the call at the Groves Apartment Complex on Northeast 17th Avenue at about 8:30 p.m. and rushed a small injured child from the apartment to a hospital.

A man, who a witness said was the child’s father, was taken into custody. No charges have been filed at this time. The witness described the man as “a nice guy.”

Witnesses told KATU News that a paramedic ran from an apartment to an ambulance with the 8-month-old baby girl.

The condition of the child has not yet been released.

Neighbors said they heard loud screaming from the parents and the child for 45 minutes. A neighbor called police.

After the baby stopped screaming, neighbors said they saw the man throw baby clothes, a box of diapers and blankets out into the parking lot dumpster.

Neighbors said police have been to the apartment before and they weren’t surprised by what happened.

Cecilio Venegas lives across the hall from the family. He said he worried about the baby.

“He (the father) used to get crazy. He was mental. He used to hit the walls … he made a couple of holes in the walls,” he said.

Residents said many children live in the complex, which has a playground.

Gresham police say that a Portland police child abuse team is now handling the investigation.

KATU News reporter Emily Sinovic contributed to this report.
